Sushi

Recently Sushi is very popular in many countries. There are many Japanese Sushi restaurants, but the Sushi is different from that found in Japan. For example, in New Zealand they don’t like to eat raw fish, so they use cooked chickens, vegetables, beans. It is not real Japanese Sushi, so by making this post, I want every one to know what real Japanese sushi is.
There are different kinds of Sushi in Japan. It depends on the locality. The most common is called "Nigirizushi". It was originally produced in Tokyo. Nigirizushi consists of small oval-shaped balls of rice seasoned with vinegar and sugar and topped with a thin slice of fish or shellfish or small sliced omelet.  The fish is mostly raw but sometimes cooked.  Usually wasabi is spread under these slices. They are eaten lightly dipped in soy souce. And sometimes slices of pickled ginger are served on the side as a condiment. Other examples of less popular kinds of Sushi are rolls, pressed Sushi, Chirashizushi, Inarizushi. Because Nigirizushi is so pervasive outside of Japan, most people living abroad are not familiar with these later types of Sushi.  So that is real Japanese Sushi. If you have a time, please make and try it !!
My friends also write about Japanese foods. Yumi wrote about Tempura, Susu wrote about Okonomiyaki. Please check them.

New Zealand

I went to New Zealand (NZ) for two months in 2011, and I had lovely days here. NZ is located in the southern hemisphere. So when Japan has winter, NZ has summer. The area of NZ is about 268.000 Km2.  Japan is about 377.000 km2. It is not a big difference, but the difference in population is big.  NZ’s population is only 4 million. On the other hand, the population of Japan is about 130 million. There are over 10 million people in Tokyo alone. That means, there are 2 and 1/2 times more people in Tokyo alone than in all of NZ.
While I was staying in NZ, I went to an intermediate school which is a junior high school, as a Japanese teacher. I taught Japanese and Japanese culture to 10~12 year olds. They are so nice and cute. I really enjoyed teaching and talking with them. Because they asked me many questions about me and Japan every time.  I stayed at Tracey’s house. She was my host mother. She is very kind. And her 2 year old son is so cute. He always kissed me. Her husband is also kind. He is a pilot, so he told me some interesting stories about his flights. I was very glad to have such a nice host family. Two months was too short for me. I wanted to stay there more, so I promised to everyone that I met to go back to NZ soon. I hope I can fulfill my promise.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a famous composer that was born to Leopold and Maria Pertl Mozalt in Salzburg, Austria. He had an elder sister Maria Anna. He composed over 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, piano, operatic, and choral music. At 17, he was engaged as a court musician in Salzburg, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position, always composing abundantly.   While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital. The cause of Mozart's death cannot be known with certainty.   He never went to school same as his sister. They studied reading, writing, arithmetic, history and geography with their father at home.   He began comporting music when he was only four years old. He wrote his first symphony at age 9, and his first opera at age 12.These are amazing facts, isn’t it?   I like listening to the classic music. When I was a junior high and high school student, I belonged to a Blass Band. And I play the French horn. He made music for French horn which is called “Horn Concertos”. I love listening and playing the music. So I choose him for “A Famous Person I admire”.

Exchange students

Last week, new exchange students came to Mishima!! There are 18 students from US and 10 students from Korea, China and Taiwan. They will stay and study here for a year.   So I will be a teaching assistant. I teach them Japanese. And also I can learn English from them. It's a nice thing to do for us , isn't it?  Last Friday, we had a welcome party at Izakaya. There were about 60 people . We drunk beer, ate lots of Japanese foods, and talked together. So we had a great time!!  I am looking forward to spending time with them from this semester.
